No, they do NOT sound the same. An older 2204 (Vertical inputs built between 1976 & 1983) will sound much warmer and bigger due to it's circut. Sometime in 1984/85 Marshall added an effects loop to the 2204. Regardless of whether it's a 2204 or 2205, the effects loop will suck tone, avoid those if you can. I just spend some time cleaning up and repairing a friends 4010 combo (2204 head in a 1x12) and they're quite amazing amps. The late 70s JMP and early 80s JCMs were basically identical, the earlier JMP are dual input/non-master, but the later 70s amps with master and cascaded gain stages should get you the same basic tone of an early 80s JCM.

Built on I know on on the 2204 you can jump the channels to produce a certain kind of sound, but on the 2203, is that lead channel still sound like a jumped 2204? Jan 07, 2016 · Im on the prowl to buy a vintage JMP amplifier. Looking for closer AC/DC tone then my JCM 2000 can provide. Will also need to purchase a good attenuator and perhaps the Schaeffer Replica system. The JMP is the nicest looking Marshall head IMO. And they will only go up in value. You cant lose!
